My friend, Ray Mullican, made a great observation to me the other day in talking about how to help people going through difficulty: "Good counseling is about seeing God accurately." Often we are in crisis because God does not meet up to our expectations in some way or another. He does not come through for us when we think he should. I am reminded of the movie "Field of Dreams" at the end the character played by Kevin Costner (Ray Kinsella) is offended he is not invited go with the players as is Terence Mann (played by James Earl Jones). Ray Kinsella says something like this: "I have done everything that has been asked of me without asking once, 'What's in it for me.'" Shoeless Joe Jackson (played by Ray Liotta) says to him, "What are you saying Ray?" Ray Kinsella answers, "What's in it for me?" Too often we approach God believing he owes us something. I agree with my friend Ray that good counsel is all about helping others see God accurately!
