Room in the Inn Events: Hope University
  • Hope University:  Strains of jazz and Langston Hughes poetry rolled down the hallways of Room in the Inn’s adult education center as the inaugural session of Hope University began this spring.  Professors from area universities and other volunteer teachers are offering college-level lectures focusing on different eras of history to Room In The Inn participants.  In the future, Hope University will expand its focus to include sessions on career development, the arts, and the social sciences. Hope University is just one area of growth for the agency’s adult education programming.  Over the past year, there has been a 44% increase in the number of classes offered to participants as weel as a 23% rise in instructional hours.  Much of this growth can be credited to the volunteers who facilitate classes and tutor learners. Lipsomb University also initiated the LIFE program for residents in Room In The Inn’s long-term recovery programs.  Residents have the opportunity to enroll in Lipscomb and take classes at no charge so they can work towards an associate’s degree. In the coming months, plans for expanding adult learning include the addition of one-day seminars about employment and personal success, offering more certificate programs, and involving participants more fully in educational planning.  As our education programs grow, we are always in need of volunteers to teach classes.  Any special skill or interest you have can be turned into a class topic!  Past examples include songwriting, storytelling yoga, knitting, and home economics.  In addition, we are always looking for volunteers to teach personal financial responsibility, 12-step classes, and to work one-on-one with GED students.  Please call if you are interested or have questions!  615-251-9791.
